When most people think of hummus, they often consider it a dip first. What is hummus? Hummus is a cold dish made from crushed chickpeas, tahini (or sesame paste), and various other spices, vegetables, and any other additives you choose. Some popular hummus ingredients include roasted red peppers, sun dried tomatoes, and chipotle, like in a spicy hummus dip. It is often eaten by dipping pieces of pita bread into it, and it makes for a good light snack.
But did you know that hummus can also be eaten as a full meal? Many of the different types of hummus can go well on their own as the base for a meal. Here are three easy recipes with hummus that you can make for lunch or dinner:
,strong>Hummus Pita Wrap
One of the easiest recipes with hummus is to make a wrap or sandwich with pita bread. First, cut the pita pocked open enough so you can spread the hummus inside it. Next, you can add other ingredients, such as lettuce, tomato, and other vegetables. Crumbled feta cheese and goat cheese also go well in a hummus pita.
Grilled Panini Wrap
While you can eat a flatbread or tortilla wrap cold, too, this meal is also delicious when it’s warmed up. First, spread the hummus onto a wrap or other flatbread; then add your vegetables or other ingredients. Next, using a panini press or other simple countertop grill, place the folded wrap inside and cook until it’s golden brown on the outside. A grilled hummus panini wrap is an excellent meal to have with a cup of soup.
Couscous Side Dish
Finally, you can also eat hummus as a side to some couscous. It can be mixed in, or you can use a hummus spread as a dip next to the dish. This is perfect for some pitas, and it makes for a more balanced meal.
